Fremmed Rase: Trondheim's Biggest Rap Icon

History and Significance.

If you're a fan of Norwegian rap, Fremmed Rase is likely a name you can't miss. This hip-hop trio from Trondheim has been an irreplaceable part of the hip-hop scene since the mid-90s. Fremmed Rase consists of Ordfører'n (Frode Myren), MC Apekatt (Jan Tore Lund), and Kapabel (Christian Teigen).

Origins and Career Start.

The guys met in the early 90s and started making music under the name Alien Breed. They rapped in both English and Norwegian but came to realize that rapping in the Trondheim dialect resonated best with audiences. Their first official release was Kapabel's solo EP 1999/2000, and in 2001, the trio returned as Fremmed Rase with Horisontal Fortellerkunst.

Debut Album Pisspreik.

In 2003, Fremmed Rase released their debut album Pisspreik, which became Trondheim's first (proper) rap release. The album featured samples from well-known Norwegian musicians such as Hans Rotmo and guest appearances from Håkon Gebhardt, Frode Sander Øien from Sanderfinger, and Gunnhild Sundli. The song "Råne" from the album garnered much attention and sparked a debate about the portrayal of women in Norwegian rap.

Success and Influence.

Fremmed Rase has over 600 concerts under their belt and has released several albums and EPs that have found a firm footing on party-related playlists. However, none of their releases can measure up to the success of Pisspreik. The group has also been instrumental in shaping and developing Trønderrap as we know it today.

In 2023, the book Fremmed Rase – Pisspreik was released, written by Frode Myren. The book provides insight into the album's creation process and Fremmed Rase's collective memory. Christer Falck, publishing manager and cultural communicator, also contributed to promoting the project.
